FACIAL SKIN CARE

Line Fillers

Although dermatologists haves routinely relied on bovine collagen to fill in wrinkles and pump up lips, it has a major drawback; it wears off after just two to three months. So the pending approval L(expected in early 2004) of hyaluronic acid gel, a temporary filler that lasts five to six months, is “big skincare news”. Look for products such as Restylane, Perlane, Restylane Fine Lines, and Hylaform, your dermatologist can help you determine which is best for you. You are cautioned, however, against similarly new, also highly hyped, permanent fillers, like silicone, Artecoll, and Radiance. They’re still experimental and not all doctors are administering them effectively.

Dark Circles A Problem

In the never-ending search for a way to obliterate blue under-eye circles (most commonly caused by broken blood vessels), one method of treatment is proving superior: thickening your skin. Recent studies show that applying an eye cream containing a peptide (a string of two or more amino acids) will stimulate collagen production and increase skin’s density, blurring blueness.

Shiny Skin

Until recently, only the acne drug Accutane markedly reduced the flow of overactive oil glands (its new, less-costly counterpart, Sotret, is effective too). But photodynamic therapy, a treatment used more commonly to treat cancer, may also limit sebaceous glad production – and end extra oiliness. The procedure involves covering super-oily areas with a chemical that makes the skin light-sensitive, then directing a red or blue light source over it. Patients usually need at least two treatments to get results. The only catch: the procedure is still being studied, and full results are not expected for another two years.

Cellulite Can Be Turned

Forget endermologie, the costly massage technique that won FDA-approval for temporarily diminishing cellulite. Subcision, a new surgical procedure, permanently erases skin dimpling. The downside? You may suffer bruising for up to two months, since a needle is used to cut the fibers that make the skin pucker – and treating both legs can run you a whopping $2500. Also, because subcision is still so new to the U.S., it is not yet widely practiced.

Avoid Serious Skin Care Problems

For years, dermatologists have focused on treating skin diseases. But new research indicates that a better strategy is to prevent ailments like eczema, psoriasis, and even skin cancer by boosting your skin’s immune system. It is recommended using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to deflect UV rays – which are known to suppress your skin’s immune system.

Erase Acne Gently

While the leading conventional acne treatments – salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A – clear-up breakouts, they may also leave your skin red and raw. Fortunately, three newer, milder alternatives exist: Avene Thermal Spring Water, a home-use hydrotherapy water containing mineral salt, can be applied to skin as a spray or as a compress to soothe inflamed areas. Salt macrodermabrasion, a deep exfoliating antibacterial treatment done by an aesthetician or dermatologist is less irritating to broken-out skin than regular microdermabrasion. Klaron, a prescription-only sulfa antibiotic gel, banishes breakouts without over-drying the skin.

Get Rid of Dry, Itchy Skin

Your days of lukewarm showers and oatmeal soaks could be over. Skin cries out for lipids – specifically cholesterol (yes, cholesterol), ceramides, and fatty acids. When applied topically, these lipids help rebalance and restore the skin’s barrier – a metaphorical “wall” that keeps moisture in and harmful particles out. At IH Distribution LLC (www.ihdistribution.com) you can find a product called Aloe Magic, a multi-purpose skin gel with soothing Aloe, calming botanicals, DNA restorative enzymes, and age-fighting Gen III technology. It’s perfect for soothing sunburns and irritated skin. It also works well as a shaving lotion.
